David Dunaway graduated as a doctor from the University of Manchester in 1989. After training in surgery in general, he qualified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1992.  He undertook his higher surgical training in Plastic Surgery in Leeds, Newcastle, London and at the Australian Craniofacial unit in Adelaide.  He is also qualified as a dentist and is a Fellow Dental Surgeon of the Royal College of Surgeons.

After gaining his specialist fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeons in Plastic Surgery (1996), he was appointed as a consultant Plastic Surgeon at Canniesburn Hospital in Scotland where his specialist interests were in facial deformity, Craniofacial Surgery and Head and Neck surgery. In July of 2000 he was invited to join the Plastic Surgery and Craniofacial Unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, undertaking the treatment of Craniofacial and facial conditions. He now leads the craniofacial service, which forms one of the four nationally designated craniofacial centres for England. In 2003 he joined the multidisciplinary facial deformity service for adults, based at University College London Hospital and the Eastman Dental Hospital.

In his private practice David Dunaway undertakes most aspects of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. He has a special interest in cosmetic surgery of the face and in particular, facial rejuvenation and rhinoplasty. David Dunaway takes an active role in training young plastic surgeons in cosmetic surgery. He lectures regularly, and participates in training organised through the Royal College of surgeons, BAPRAS and Royal society of Medicine.

He has an international practise in the treatment of craniofacial deformity including facial reconstruction after injury or from the treatment of head and neck tumours. Other interests include the management of vascular malformations and skin lesions.

David Dunaway is a past president of the plastic surgery section of the Royal Society of Medicine. He is a member of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons, British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, British Medical Association, the International Society of Craniofacial Surgery and the European Society of Craniofacial Surgeons.  

David Dunaway lectures nationally and internationally on many aspects of plastic surgery and takes an active interest in the education of Plastic Surgeons both in the UK and abroad. He is actively involved in teaching reconstructive surgery to surgeons in West Africa and in Facing the World, a British charity treating children from third world countries with craniofacial deformity.
